When was the last time did you stepped outside of your comfort zone?
It is scary but it is thrilling and it will push you in healthy ways.
What is your comfort zone?
Doing things by the book?
Sticking to your routines
Not extending yourself beyond your limit?
If you’re like me, you have a goal that you want to accomplish but fear, insecurities and doubts stand in your way, keeping you in your comfort zone as a result.
Don’t you worry, we all have a comfort zone.
My comfort zone includes:
-Sticking to the script making my words and actions somewhat predictable.
-Limiting myself- I know I can do more but I stop myself at times.
-Being too scared to say or do something that I haven’t done or said before.
-Keeping to myself- not talking about things that are on my mind.
So how do you step outside of your comfort zone?
1. Do something without thinking too much about it.
The more you think about doing something that you’re scared of doing, the more you tell yourself not to do it.
I am shy and I am not the best at talking to strangers.
One day, I was going for a walk and I saw a woman jogging in my direction. Something told me to smile or wave at her. You never know, it could make someone’s day! She looked at me and smiled so I did a little clap for her because she looked like she was putting in some serious work.
Mind you, the area around my house has a lot of hills so imaging jogging along the roads, it is super hard.
I was nervous to even say hi or wave but I did it. It costs nothing to be nice. It took 2 seconds to interact with a stranger and I felt so much better after.
2.Say yes to something you usually say no to.
At times, it is easier to say no to something that you’d rather not do. I do not enjoy going to social events at times especially if I go by myself. As part of my daily routine, I refer to my goals and tell myself that it would be over faster than we know it.
I know it is a bit of a negative thought but it usually is the case. Time is flying by quickly and before you’ll know it, you’ll be at the event mingling with a bunch of strangers. Who knows you may make great connections.
3. Make a change in your everyday routine.
If you are like me, you love being organised and you love having a routine. When I go for my morning walks, I tend to take the same paths often. There is a park by my apartment that I rarely go to, on one sunny morning, I made a detour and went to the park. And it was beautiful.
I stopped listening to my music and I started listening to the birds chirping. It is important to spend time in nature. It has tons of health benefits.
4. Make a drastic change – change your environment.
I made the crazy decision to move to Canada at the tender age of 20. I was super ready for change and I had to do something extraordinary. As part of my university course, I completed a study abroad program in Montreal, Canada. Not only was I in a foreign country with no place to live for the first week, I learned so much about myself. Living abroad has shown me that I am resourceful and independent. I know that if anything comes my way, I will be able to handle it!
5. Do something that scares you.
Moving abroad scared me. But what scares me, even more, is putting myself out there. I took a risk and I did something new…. I started a YouTube channel!!!
Starting a new adventure is frightening but doable. Anything is possible. I decided to start a YouTube channel as it was something I was considering doing for many years but I let my own fears and insecurities get in the way.
I’ve been getting sweet messages from my loved ones and strangers which have really shown me that I can do it! It will boost my confidence and push me. I am ready and always available for growth.
